The government has started distributing fertiliser nationally to assist smallholder farmers, according to Minister of Food and Agriculture Eric Opoku.

Each agricultural constituency in the nation will receive 1,500 bags of fertiliser.

In front of Parliament’s Committee on Assurances, the minister revealed the development while providing an update on national agricultural productivity metrics.

The distribution, according to Mr. Opoku, is intended to guarantee that smallholder farmers, who comprise the great majority of Ghana’s farming community, have prompt access to necessary farming inputs in order to assure national food security and increase overall crop yields during the current planting season.

The minister stressed that in order to guarantee that resources are allocated directly into discrete constituencies, the distribution model avoids more general district boundaries.

“We have recently distributed fertilisers to all the agricultural constituencies in this country. Every constituency has been given 1,500 bags. It is not even district, it is every constituency,” Mr. Opoku stated.

The minister addressed possible gaps in the initial supply chain by pointing out that logistics teams are striving to complete deliveries as soon as possible, even though certain regions are still waiting for their actual stock because of transportation schedules.

The minister said, “Those who have not received, perhaps the contractors are still supplying, so they will receive theirs. However, it is anticipated that each district will have received the amounts we have allocated to them by the end of next week.”

In addition to the Feed Ghana Programme, which aims to modernise agricultural methods and reduce the nation’s dependency on food imports, the ministry’s larger input distribution strategy includes the fertiliser drive.
