President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate dissolution of the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral of Ghana Project, bringing a new phase to the government’s handling of the controversial National Cathedral project.
The decision was formally communicated in a letter dated September 18, 2026, and signed by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga.
In the letter addressed to the Chairman and members of the Board, the Minister stated that President Mahama had directed the dissolution of the National Cathedral Board of Trustees with immediate effect.
National Cathedral Project Site to Be Handed Over
Following the dissolution, the trustees have been instructed to work with the project consultant to formally hand over the National Cathedral project site to the Ministry by October 31, 2026.
The Ministry said the handover is intended to enable the government to assess the project and determine the future of the National Cathedral of Ghana.
The development is expected to pave the way for the government to make decisions regarding the next phase of the major religious and infrastructure project.
Opoku Onyinah-Led Board Dissolved
The letter was addressed to the Board of Trustees chaired by Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah.
Copies of the directive were sent to key government officials and institutions, including the Secretary to the President, the Chief of Staff at Jubilee House, the Deputy Minister and Chief Director of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, as well as the Executive Director of the National Cathedral of Ghana Secretariat.
The dissolution marks a significant administrative development concerning the National Cathedral project.
Government Thanks National Cathedral Trustees
Despite the dissolution of the Board, Minister Mahama Ayariga expressed appreciation to the trustees for their service to the project.
On behalf of President Mahama, the Minister thanked the members for their commitment to promoting the Christian faith in Ghana.
The government is now expected to take further decisions on the National Cathedral project after the formal handover of the site.
The next steps could determine the future direction, management and development of the National Cathedral initiative as the government reviews the project following the dissolution of its Board of Trustees.
