The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Women’s Wing has staged a demonstration in Obuasi in the Ashanti Region, demanding justice for 19 female students of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) allegedly subjected to sexual abuse by the school’s headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai.

The protest, organised under the theme “Justice for Our Girls,” seeks accountability over the disturbing allegations and calls for stronger measures to protect students against sexual abuse, harassment and other forms of misconduct in Ghanaian schools.

The demonstration was led by the NPP National Women’s Organiser, Mavis Hawa Koomson, who appealed to key government officials and security authorities to ensure that the affected students receive justice.

Among those called upon to intervene were President John Dramani Mahama, Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno and the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey.

Hawa Koomson Calls for Justice for Obuasi SHTS Students

Addressing the demonstrators, Hawa Koomson stressed the need for the country to protect the rights, safety and future of the affected students.

She warned that Ghana would fail the young girls if authorities did not take decisive action to address the allegations and hold anyone found culpable accountable.

“These girls will never forgive us as a country if we fail them. It is their future, and we need to protect them. They must have confidence in Ghanaians and their leaders,” she stated.

She emphasised that the welfare of the students should remain a national priority and urged authorities to ensure that the investigation produces the necessary results.

Senior NPP Officials Join Obuasi Demonstration

The protest also attracted other prominent NPP officials, including the party’s Second Vice Chairman, Nana Boakye, and General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Koduah.

Several members of the party’s Women’s Wing joined the demonstration to express solidarity with the affected students and demand stronger protection for girls in educational institutions.

The protesters maintained that allegations of sexual abuse involving students must be treated with urgency to prevent similar incidents in schools across the country.

Obuasi SHTS Sexual Abuse Allegations Trigger Public Concern

The allegations against headmaster Zakaria Abdulai reportedly include rape, sexual harassment and sexual assault involving female students of Obuasi Senior High Technical School.

The case has generated widespread public concern and renewed calls for improved child protection policies, school safety measures and accountability within Ghana’s education sector.

The Ghana Education Service (GES), the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service have initiated steps to address the matter.

However, the NPP Women’s Wing insists that more decisive action is required to protect the affected students, establish the facts and ensure that justice is served.

The demonstration has further intensified public discussions about sexual abuse in Ghanaian schools, the protection of female students and the responsibility of educational authorities to provide safe learning environments for children.

The protesters are calling for a thorough investigation and appropriate action against anyone found responsible, while emphasising that the safety, dignity and future of the affected girls must not be compromised.
