Mahama Ayariga, the Bawku Central member of parliament, has vehemently denounced the alleged military atrocities committed against residents in Bawku on the evening of Tuesday, March 18, 2025.

He said the military’s actions were wrong and that he was deeply concerned about allegations that elderly inhabitants, women, and children were being abused after an unidentified shooter killed a military officer.

The MP pledged to hold the military fully responsible for their actions.

Mr. Ayariga acknowledged the military officer’s terrible death but said that it was not acceptable to strike innocent civilians in retaliation.

“I regret the accidental killing of a military personnel and I condemn that dastardly act,” he stated.

“However, ransacking homes, beating innocent civilians, and holding the entire town to ransom cannot be justified.

The rule of law must prevail, and those responsible for maintaining order should never engage in such acts of violence.”

Instead of using what he called indiscriminate aggression, the Bawku Central MP urged the military leadership and local authorities to work together to investigate the soldier’s death.

He advised everyone to exercise restraint and offered his sympathies to the soldier’s family.

“I regret that the military command did not heed my appeal not to react violently, and they went ahead to do what they did,” he said, expressing dismay that his previous calls for the military to proceed cautiously had gone unanswered. To bring peace back, we must cooperate.

“I have confidence that all sides will repose trust in His Majesty the Asantehene to bring finality to the situation in Bawku and end the violence we are experiencing,” he stated.

In the future, Mr. Ayariga hoped that all sides of the Bawku dispute would have faith in the peace mediation efforts headed by Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene.

The MP reaffirmed his dedication to promoting peace and making sure that the victims of the initial attack and the military’s response receive justice.
