Mubarak Muntaka, the interior minister, has promised that individuals who incited violence during the parliamentary elections that were rerun in the Ablekuma North seat would face consequences.
He said that as part of its investigations to find and capture the criminals, the Ghana Police Service is now examining video evidence.
The Minister denounced the attacks as a “scar on the conscience” of the country, especially its political elite, when speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, July 14.
“Let me say that we condemn this in no uncertain terms. For me, it is a scar on all our consciences that, after practicing democracy for over three decades, we still cannot conduct an election that is free from violence,” he said.
“These are individuals who commit these acts and then vanish from the system. It takes time, but we will track them. We are not going to let this go unpunished, unless they flee the country. So long as they remain within reach, they should be assured that the law will take its course. We cannot allow this to continue in our country,” he added.
The Minister further emphasized that the Ablekuma North event has taught us valuable lessons.
He gave Ghanaians his word that more safeguards would be implemented to guarantee a peaceful and violence-free by-election in Akwatia.
