Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, a former minister for youth and sports, has declared that he opposes the concept of the government airlifting supporters to Mexico, Canada, and the United States to support the Black Stars during the FIFA World Cup.

He cited the Dzamefe Commission’s conclusions, which recommended against funding such projects with public monies.

In reaction to recent statements made by Sports Minister Kofi Adams regarding transporting fans to the competition, Vanderpuye made the remarks, stating that corporate assistance through the fundraising committee set up to mobilise resources should be the driving force behind any such endeavour.

The former sports minister stated in an interview with Citi Sports on Thursday, February 5, 2026: “The question will not be who will be taken to the venue? One of the hardest things a minister will have to accomplish is that.

“I would not want to be in his shoes,” he said, emphasising the difficulties of fairly choosing supporters.

“Every Ghanaian should be able to get the opportunity to support the Black Stars. I don’t think we should do politics with it,” he said, highlighting the possibility of conflicts among fan groups and government meddling.

Additionally, Vanderpuye urged business organisations to invest in the project, pointing out that those that do so would reap substantial rewards.

He went on to say, “Any organization that commits itself will get very significant benefit,” emphasising that business engagement, not government support, should be the driving force behind the endeavour.
