As the southern African country celebrates the 50th anniversary of its independence, the Ghanaian government has reaffirmed its strong commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with the Republic of Mozambique.

The High Commission of Mozambique sponsored the somber and joyous celebration at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra on Saturday, June 28, 2025.

His Excellency Daniel Francisco Chapo, President of the Republic of Mozambique, and the Mozambican people were congratulated on achieving this historic milestone by Hon. Samuel Nartey George, MP, Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, who delivered the official commemorative speech on behalf of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana.

“Fifty years ago, on the 25th of June, 1975, the people of Mozambique emerged from the shackles of colonial rule and proclaimed to the world their right to self-determination, freedom, and sovereignty.”

“Today, we join you in commemorating that defining moment in your national history, which was achieved through the sacrifice, courage, and unrelenting struggle of the Mozambican people.”

“We pay a heartfelt tribute to the courageous freedom fighters, whose sacrifices and vision were instrumental in securing the nation’s freedom,” the Minister said.

According to Hon. Nartey George, Ghana has always seen Mozambique’s fight for independence as an essential component of the larger African liberation movement rather than just a domestic endeavor. He emphasized that “we fondly recall with a deep sense of pride the unwavering solidarity that so firmly bound our two countries in shared purpose during those challenging periods.”

He claimed that commemorating Mozambique’s 50th anniversary of independence was a potent illustration of the country’s tenacity and development.

It commemorates fifty years of resolute nation-building, peace, and progress in addition to the victory over colonial authority.

The Minister went on to say that the people of Mozambique have persisted in their quest for peace, progress, and prosperity in the face of a number of post-independence obstacles, such as terrorism, natural disasters, civil conflict, and socioeconomic hardships.

“Mozambique’s remarkable progress in sectors such as energy, agriculture, education, and regional integration stands as a testament to what can be achieved through national determination and visionary leadership.”

“The country’s active engagement and growing contributions within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African Union further reflect its steadfast commitment to peace, stability, and collective progress across the African continent.” He noted.

Therefore, the Minister reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to enhancing bilateral ties with Mozambique.

In addition to strengthening the current bilateral ties between Ghana and Mozambique, he said, the reactivation of a Permanent Joint Cooperation Commission (PJCC) between our nations would greatly advance our common objectives of regional integration and solidarity among African States. This would involve cooperation in important areas like agriculture, oil and gas, fisheries, trade and investment, as well as in the security and education sectors.

H.E. Mr. Fortunato Albrinho, the High Commissioner of Mozambique to Ghana, praised Ghana’s continuous support for Mozambique, which dates back to the liberation movements on the continent.

H.E. Albrinho cited Mozambique’s active participation in the African Union and SADC as proof of its ongoing dedication to building solid relationships with Ghana and other African countries.

His words emphasized the two nations’ shared desire for a peaceful, prosperous, and integrated Africa as well as the eternal Pan-African link that binds them.
