Ghana’s public debt stock increased by GH¢13.1 billion between May and July 2026, reaching GH¢733.9 billion from GH¢720.8 billion, according to the latest Bank of Ghana economic and financial data released in September 2026.
The increase in Ghana’s public debt occurred despite a slight decline recorded in June. The total public debt stock fell from GH¢720.8 billion in May to GH¢719.5 billion in June, before rising significantly to GH¢733.9 billion in July.
In US dollar terms, Ghana’s public debt remained relatively stable over the same period. The debt stock increased from US$61.5 billion in May to US$63.4 billion in June, before declining slightly to US$62.8 billion in July 2026.
The latest figures provide an update on the country’s debt position and broader economic outlook, as policymakers continue to focus on fiscal management and debt sustainability.
Ghana’s Domestic Debt Increases
The domestic debt component recorded a more significant increase during the period under review.
According to the Bank of Ghana data, domestic debt rose from GH¢379.1 billion in May to GH¢396.7 billion in July 2026, representing an increase of GH¢17.6 billion over the two-month period.
The latest Ghana public debt figures are expected to remain a key indicator for investors, financial institutions and economic analysts monitoring the country’s fiscal position, government borrowing and debt management efforts.
