Four people connected to the now-defunct Power Distribution Services (PDS) Ghana Limited were detained by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) last week in connection with ongoing investigations into the transfer of substantial sums of money thought to belong to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), according to Minister of State Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who oversees Government Communications.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu identified the people detained as Philip Ayensu, Viraj Phat, Sophia Korkor, and Justice Menka-Premoh in a statement published on X on Monday, May 4, 2026.

The minister claims that all four suspects have subsequently been released on bond while the inquiry is ongoing.

The investigation is connected to financial transactions involving money that may have belonged to Ghana’s state-owned power distributor, ECG.

“The Bureau of National Intelligence (BNI) arrested the following persons affiliated to PDS last week as part of investigations into the transfer of large sums of money believed to belong to ECG.”

“The quartet have since been given bail pending further investigations,” the minister’s post stated.

The business at the center of the investigation, PDS Ghana Limited, was a private consortium that, on March 1, 2019, assumed control of ECG’s energy distribution activities through a concession deal.

However, only a few months later, the government terminated the agreement due to allegations of bogus financial guarantees.

The movement and potential misappropriation of the funds are the main topics of the authorities’ ongoing investigations.
