The second May Day 2026 was observed by Parliament with the theme “Welcome Home.”

A unique day to honour the workforce’s vital assistance and acknowledge their dedication, tenacity, and contributions to both institutional and national progress.

Speaking on behalf of the Speaker, the First Deputy Speaker, Hon. Bernard Ahiafor, noted that Parliament is a shared home rather than just a place of employment and called the topic “very apt, appropriate, and timely.”

He underlined that we cannot discuss work without discussing people, reminding everyone that the welfare of our people is the real indicator of the quality of our job.

He called for the integration of our traditional attire into our daily wardrobes and the use of our native tongues at home and in the classroom.

He urged a renewed commitment to identity, citing Standing Order 63, which captures the use of local language as optional in deliberations. He stated that it is important that we “come home” and present who we are so that future generations can inherit a tale they can fully tell.

Mr. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, the clerk, urged officers to go above and above and leave a legacy while praising them for their commitment to service.

He characterised the occasion as an invitation to re-establish a connection with our roots through cultural renewal, reiterating the idea that an unexamined life is not worth living.

Dr Gloria Sarku Kumawu, Deputy Clerk, C&FMS, asked everyone to remember their origins, the people who have shaped industries, ministries, and the advancements made both within and beyond the organization.

Under the tenets of diversity for unity and diversity for progress, what started last year has now grown into a significant tradition that highlights Ghanaian heritage, promotes unity, and stimulates creativity, she continued.

The event served as a unifying platform that celebrated culture, honoured service, and reinforced a shared commitment to national development by bringing together leadership, public officials, employees at all levels, and the media.
