The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been advised by the Electoral Commission (EC) to have discussions instead of holding protests on the streets in order to address issues with the 2024 Voters Register.
The European Commission emphasized at a press conference on Thursday, September 12, 2024, that protests are not a viable means of guaranteeing a credible voter registration. The EC further said that it has repeatedly requested information from the NDC regarding the purported inconsistencies in the voter registration.
“The Commission strongly believes that the surest way to attain a credible and robust register is not through demonstrations,” stated Samuel Tettey, the EC’s Deputy Commissioner of Operations.
“We have repeatedly requested the data on discrepancies from the NDC to no avail. The best place to resolve these issues is at the discussion table.”
The EC stated that if the NDC gives the required information, it will look into any disparities. “We urge them to submit details of the discrepancies they have identified to enable the Commission to investigate and demonstrate to them that their concerns have been resolved,” Mr. Tettey stated.
The Commission also urged NDC flagbearer John Mahama to push his party to hold talks, stressing that communication would promote openness and confidence in the election system.
“We are confident that the former President will heed our calls and bring his party to the discussion table,” the EC declared.
The EC reassured the public by restating its commitment to providing a reliable voter registration for the general elections scheduled for December 2024 and by pleading with them to have faith in its work.
As in 2020, the EC said, “The Commission is dedicated to offering a strong and reliable Voters Register that will ensure free, fair, and transparent elections.”
As a result, it asked the NDC to cooperate in order to guarantee the integrity of the 2024 elections rather than taking any moves that would lead to needless conflict.
