The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and a national task group have been instructed by President John Dramani Mahama to carry out a thorough evaluation of Accra’s limited and protected lands.
The directive attempts to identify encroached, vulnerable, and unauthorised development zones in order to mitigate the capital’s repeated floods.
When the President returned from the United Kingdom and Belarus on Tuesday, June 9, he briefed his cabinet at Accra International Airport, emphasising the importance of the mapping initiative.
“I have directed the task force, NADMO and all the others to do a presentation to us. We are going to identify all the restricted waterways,” he stated.
Relevant authorities will have the authority to secure protected areas and stop additional encroachment after the report is submitted.
Mahama paved the way for action about the ensuing enforcement, saying, “When they have done that, I am giving the directive that they should go ahead to do what they have to do.”
The President asked people to see these initiatives as essential for long-term urban resilience rather than punitive state action, even if he acknowledged that strong enforcement, including possible demolitions, might provoke public disapproval.
He stated, “I hope when we do that [possible demolition], all Ghanaians will understand that it is the government’s business to protect the safety of all of us.”
