President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated a five-member committee to oversee the implementation of the GH¢1 billion Bawku Revitalisation Fund, a government initiative aimed at accelerating infrastructure development and restoring economic activity in Bawku and surrounding communities.
The committee is chaired by Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson and includes Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga, His Royal Majesty Cletus Abugri, Chief of Tempane, Upper East Regional Minister Akamugri Donatus Atanga, and Garu MP Dr Thomas Winsum Anabah.
The committee was inaugurated at the Presidency on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, with President Mahama confirming that funding for the Bawku development initiative has been secured.
According to the President, the availability of funding means the government can now move ahead with key development projects following improvements in the security situation in Bawku.
President Mahama explained that the Bawku Revitalisation Fund was established after government received the report of the Otumfuo Mediation Committee in December 2025. The report helped renew efforts to promote peace, stability and development in the area.
The President noted that the prolonged conflict in Bawku had negatively affected public services, infrastructure development and economic activities, while several major projects were delayed or suspended.
One of the affected projects is the Tamli Dam project, which has experienced delays as a result of the instability in the area.
With relative peace gradually returning to Bawku, President Mahama said the government is determined to restart stalled development projects and ensure that residents of Bawku and neighbouring districts benefit from national development programmes.
The GH¢1 billion Bawku Revitalisation Fund is therefore expected to play a major role in supporting infrastructure projects, improving public services and promoting sustainable development in the Upper East Region.
