President Akufo-Addo urged Organized Labor to postpone its planned strike, which is scheduled to begin on Thursday, October 10, but the organization has remained resolute.
The government’s refusal to address the problems raised by illegal mining, or galamsey, is the reason behind the strike.
“While the President has shown some commitment, we need more than just promises
We need action, and until we see concrete steps being taken, our position remains unchanged. We cannot sit by while our environment is destroyed, and we will not compromise on the future of our natural resources,” Joshua Ansah, Secretary General of Organised Labour, declared
President Akufo-Addo urged organized labor to reevaluate its proposed statewide strike last week, stressing his dedication to combating illicit mining, a major issue for the unions.
President Akufo-Addo noted the mounting frustration over the environmental harm caused by illicit mining during a closed-door meeting with union leaders on Thursday, October 3, but he asked for more time to address their requests.
The government’s perceived lack of action to stop the environmental damage brought on by illicit mining has alarmed the unions.
The unions contend that Ghana’s natural resources are seriously threatened by the widespread unlawful mining and are calling for swift action.
Union leaders have warned that the issue warrants immediate action to protect the country’s ecosystem from further harm.
