Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, has blamed Ghana’s recent economic woes on what he termed fiscal recklessness by the former Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

Speaking at the Africa-Singapore Business Forum on Monday, August 25, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu stated that the previous government’s overspending contributed significantly to the country’s financial downfall.

“One of the problems that precipitated the economic decline in the very recent past under the NPP was fiscal indiscipline, the tendency to live outside of our means and spend more than we earn,” he said.

The Minister distinguished the current Mahama administration from its predecessor, emphasizing that the current government has been careful with national resources and is prioritizing expenditures in essential industries.

“We are not spending beyond our means; we are not spending lavishly. We are spending on critical sectors,” he added.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu also emphasized the government’s cost-cutting strategy, citing the slim ministerial delegation representing Ghana at the Singapore summit.

“Look at the delegation that came here; they are just 3 or 4 ministers of state. But if I show you the delegations that followed President Akufo-Addo around when he traveled, you’d be amazed. All of these add up to the cost of running government,” he reiterated.

Meanwhile, the Minister reinforced his party’s confidence in the impending elections, claiming that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would win Dr. Edward Omane Boamah’s Akwatia parliamentary seat.

He then continued by saying, “NDC will honour Dr. Edward Omane Boamah with the Akwatia seat victory.”
