The Ghanaian government has been accused by school meal caterers in all 16 regions of underpaying them the arrears for the 2024 school term.

In an interview with Onua FM’s Yen Nsempa on July 2, 2024, a caterer expressed her dissatisfaction about grants and taxes taken from their already meager earnings. She said that caterers receive only GH₵0.90 (GH₵1.20 – GH₵0.3) per child, which is woefully insufficient to offer wholesome meals.

She added that because taxes cut into their income, they have to take out loans to pay their debts.

In the meantime, the administration clarified in a statement that caterers worked for a total of 58 days during the first term period, which officially started on October 9, 2023.

The overall number of cooking days was 54, however four (4) days were subtracted from the total due to an official notice directing caterers to use October 3–6 for a clean-up exercise.

In response to the problem, the National Secretariat has mandated that caterers with legitimate concerns notify different regional coordinators.
