The recent fire that burned multiple stores close to Kumasi’s Old Central Market, putting merchants and business owners in a state of anguish, has deeply alarmed the Ashanti Caucus in Parliament.
The caucus expressed its condolences to the impacted victims and demanded prompt government action in a press release issued by Hon. Vincent Ekow Assafuah, Esq.
A concerning trend of rising fire outbreaks in the Ashanti Region, which continue to destroy businesses, was brought to light in the statement.
“In February, a devastating fire swept through Suame Magazine, destroying about 25 spare parts shops and 34 vehicles,” the caucus noted. “The Kwadaso Wood Market has been hit twice within a month, while in March, a raging fire at the Konongo Mining Stores wiped out numerous businesses.”
The caucus bemoaned the difficulties the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) faces because of a lack of modern equipment, an inadequate water supply, and a shortage of manpower, with the most recent fire taking place on March 21, 2025, at Adum, one of Kumasi’s largest commercial hubs.
The Ashanti Region, a significant economic center, cannot afford to experience such catastrophes unless prompt action is taken. “We demand urgent action to protect lives, livelihoods, and investments in the region,” the caucus stressed.
The caucus reiterated its need for prompt government action to address the ongoing fire breakouts and assured impacted victims of their continued support.
“We call on the Minister for the Interior to take immediate steps to investigate these recurring fires and implement comprehensive measures to prevent further occurrences,” the statement added.
