The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice will undertake bilateral conversations with his counterparts at the US Department of Justice regarding ongoing extradition requests from Ghana and the United States.
This comes after Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, the former chief executive officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Center (MASLOC), was extradited to Ghana to start a 10-year prison sentence following her conviction in 2024.
In a statement released on June 9, 2026, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, stated that the talks would address all outstanding extradition petitions between Ghana and the United States since 2009.
Former Finance Minister Kenneth Ofori-Atta is involved in one of the ongoing extradition cases.
In relation to corruption and corruption-related accusations brought against him by the Office of the Special Prosecutor, Ghana has requested extradition to the United States.
On January 6, 2026, Mr. Ofori-Atta was taken into custody by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Washington, DC.
On April 7, 2026, Mr. Ofori-Atta was freed from ICE custody after his legal team successfully claimed that he could not be lawfully regarded a flight risk in the absence of a formal extradition request from Ghana on file with the court.
Ernest Darko Akore, a dual Ghanaian-American citizen and former assistant to Mr. Ofori-Atta, is the subject of another ongoing extradition case. He is accused of using public office for personal gain and inflicting financial loss to the state.
In April 2024, the Accra High Court found Ms Sedina Attionu Tamakloe guilty and sentenced her in absentia on charges of causing financial loss to the state, stealing, money laundering, conspiracy, and procurement-related offences related to her time as MASLOC CEO from 2013 to 2016.
The Ghanaian government formally requested her extradition to the United States in July 2024 so that she may fulfil her sentence. In January 2026, American authorities informed Ghana that her surrender had been authorised after judicial processes in the United States.
When Ms. Tamakloe Attionu arrived on a United Airlines aircraft on Tuesday morning, officials from the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Prisons Service took her into prison. Plans are in place for her to start serving her sentence.
