The second woman to hold this esteemed post in the Ghana Prisons Service is Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie (ESQ.), the recently appointed Director-General of Prisons.
She was the previous Deputy Director-General of Prisons, overseeing Administration and Finance.
When Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie succeeded Mr. Isaac Kofi Egyir, who was named the DG of Prisons on October 28, 2021, by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, she was appointed by President John Dramani Mahama on March 14, 2025.
She is a seasoned security and prisons professional who has worked for the Ghana Prisons Service for more than 37 years.
Having earned an Advanced Level Certificate as a recruit in 1987, she progressed through the ranks of junior officers until 1995.
She earned her first degree from the University of Ghana in 1993, and after passing the cadet course in 1994, she enlisted in the Senior Officer Corps.
Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie served in a number of acting command roles and substantive leadership roles, such as officer-in-charge, classroom instructor, adjutant, course commander, and chief legal officer.
In addition to serving as the Director of Operations, Technical & Services, and Prisons Health, she was renowned for her ability to manage intricate problems in a variety of fields.
By resolving legal and administrative issues, creating policies, restoring and harmonizing allowances, and spearheading reforms that benefited personnel, prisoners, and stakeholders, Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie contributed to the improvement of staff welfare.
In her capacity as Chief Legal Officer, she was in charge of reviewing the Prison Service and Parole Bills and assisting in the passage of rules pertaining to prison discipline and general administration.
She made the James Camp Prisons a model facility by introducing concepts to enhance prison administration with an emphasis on reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration.
Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie, who was the Deputy Director of Prisons at the time, successfully lobbied for assistance from national and international organizations, philanthropists, and religious groups during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In order to aid in the reformation and rehabilitation of prisoners, the Director-General also instituted programs for the creative arts and skill training.
Her programs put employee well-being, professional growth, and the establishment of a secure work environment first while encouraging revenue-generating endeavors to lessen dependency on government support.
DGP Patience Baffoe-Bonnie has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with Social Work from the University of Ghana, Legon, as well as a Barrister-at-Law and Qualifying Certificate from the Ghana School of Law.
She graduated from Nana Osae Djan Experimental Primary School in Nsawam, as well as Tema Secondary and Winneba Secondary.
She has participated in a number of domestic and foreign training courses, such as those on corporate governance, strategic leadership, international criminal law and justice, and workforce planning in the UK.
She also served as a mentor, counselor, and planner for the UN Mission in Liberia.
Outside of her career, she likes to paint, play basketball, cook, dance, travel, and spend time with kids.
She has received numerous honors for her commitment and professionalism, including the Ghana Women’s Award (Outstanding Female Prisons Officer, 2013), the Female Pillar of Modern Public Service Award, and the HD LeadHERS Xperience Award (Exceptional Award for Women in Leadership, 2023).
She is married and has children.
