The electronic road toll system will go into operation by the fourth quarter of 2026, according to the Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament.

This was revealed to the Parliamentary Press Corps in Accra on Thursday by Isaac Adjei Mensah, the Committee Chairperson and Wassa East Member of Parliament.

The declaration was made in response to several issues brought up earlier in the week by the Minority Caucus.

He insisted that the NPP Minority had no moral basis to condemn the speed at which the program was being implemented, explaining that all feasibility studies and preparation procedures will soon be completed.

Mr. Adjei Mensah pointed out that the road toll brought in roughly GH¢60 million a month for the state prior to its elimination by the previous administration.

He maintained that the Minority’s complaints were unfounded because the removal of the tolls resulted in large revenue losses.

The awarding of road contracts under the “Big Push” infrastructure plan was one of the key problems brought up by the Minority that the Committee considered.

It made clear that competitive bidding was used to award the remaining 400 contracts, with only 44% coming from sole sourcing.

The Boankra Inland Port project, the Mpakadan Railway System, the Road Fund’s reorganisation into the Road Maintenance Trust Fund, and the partial payment of GH¢107 billion in road arrears were among the other topics covered.

The Committee underlined that the electronic toll system will ensure efficiency and transparency in collecting while restoring a sustainable income stream for infrastructure development and road maintenance.
