Following a recent attack in Bawku, the Upper East Region’s curfew hours for Bawku Municipality and its environs were reviewed by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak on Wednesday, April 9.

The Minister stated that the new curfew will be in effect from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

Executive Instrument issued this decision after considering the Upper East Regional Security Council’s recommendations.

Chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth, and all locals are being urged by the government to employ non-violent methods to help keep the peace and to display caution in the face of present difficulties.

Additionally, the Minister declared that all offensive weapons, ammunition, and firearms would be prohibited in the impacted areas.

Anyone discovered in possession of such items will be detained and charged, he warned.

The updated curfew comes after a troubling event in Bawku where police officers were allegedly attacked by people.

As a result of the incident, a police pickup truck, the Divisional Commander’s house, and another house were set on fire.

During the conflict, there were also gunfire exchanges between the two sides.
