Vice President Jane Opoku-Agyemang has emphasized the need for international collaboration in combating climate change, emphasizing that justice and equity must direct the global response.

In a social media post, the vice president disclosed that she met with H.E. Selwin Hart, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Advisor on Climate Action and Just Transition, in Addis Ababa.

She began the discussion by accepting Mr. Hart’s condolences for the fatal helicopter tragedy in Ghana before moving on to the urgent need to address climate change.

“Climate change recognizes no national borders. Since many of the causes of climate change are man-made, we must find sustainable and fair solutions together,” she said.

She noted increasing sea levels, migratory pressures, and food shortages as top issues, saying that poorer nations, which contribute the least to the crisis, sometimes face the largest burdens.

Opoku-Agyemang called the situation unfair, pointing out the disproportionate burden placed on poorer countries.

She pushed for a multifaceted, Pan-African strategy to climate change where nations share ideas, integrate adaptation, and scale up solutions jointly, and she asked the UN to elevate African voices on the international scene.

The Vice President also highlighted Ghana’s climate measures, such as the University of Energy and Natural Resources’ efforts to prepare citizens to uphold climate-related legislation and the floating solar panels at the Bui Dam to diversify energy sources.

She did, however, warn that financial reforms are necessary for real progress.

“Climate solutions must go hand in hand with reforms to the international financial architecture, as unsustainable debt servicing continues to divert resources away from critical sectors such as education, healthcare, and climate adaptation strategies,” she explained.

In her closing statement, Opoku-Agyemang advocated for an all-encompassing worldwide strategy:

“We need a holistic approach to climate, debt, and development challenges. Fairness, equity, and accountability must guide global action if we are to achieve just and lasting solutions.”
