Today, Tuesday, September 2, voters in the Eastern Region’s Akwatia Constituency will cast ballots to choose a new MP in the wake of incumbent Ernest Kumi’s passing.
The fiercely contested by-election, which has swiftly turned into a pivotal battle between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is anticipated to draw more than 50,000 registered voters.
The NPP is putting its faith in Solomon Kwame Asumadu, while the NDC is fielding Bernard Bediako Baidoo. With the help of national officials and party heavyweights who have made calculated appearances in the constituency, both candidates have run vigorous campaigns.
The Ghana Police Service has increased security, sending out more than 5,500 officers to keep the calm during the election.
In addition to promising prompt punishment against violators, the police have issued a warning against voter intimidation, violence, and any other violation of electoral regulations.
In addition to stating that specific steps have been put in place to ensure the timely distribution of voting materials, tight supervision, and fast collation of results, the Electoral Commission has assured the public that the election will be transparent and credible.
