More than 54,000 candidates who obtained Grade 9 in English Language or Mathematics in the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) will have the opportunity to gain admission to Senior High School (SHS) through the self-placement process.
The Ministry of Education has clarified that candidates who scored Grade 9 in either English Language or Mathematics, or both subjects, remain eligible to pursue Senior High School education even if they were not automatically placed through the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).
Deputy Minister for Education, Dr Clement Apaak, has urged affected candidates and their parents not to panic, explaining that the government has created an opportunity for them to participate in the CSSPS self-placement exercise.
According to Dr Apaak, eligible candidates can access the self-placement platform and select from SHS institutions with available vacancies to continue their education.
“To candidates who obtained a score of nine in English Language or Mathematics or in both subjects, the government is providing you with an opportunity to participate in the self-placement.”
He encouraged candidates to take advantage of the opportunity and proceed with their secondary education.
The Ministry of Education also disclosed that more than 500,000 qualified BECE candidates have already been automatically placed through the CSSPS as part of the 2026 SHS placement exercise.
Candidates who were not automatically placed but qualify for self-placement have been advised to visit the CSSPS portal, follow the required instructions and select schools where vacancies are available.
Meanwhile, CSSPS resolution centres have been established across the country to provide assistance to candidates and parents experiencing difficulties with the 2026 SHS placement process.
The centres are expected to help resolve placement-related concerns and guide families through the self-placement and Senior High School admission process.
