President John Dramani Mahama has urged the government to mobilise resources to self-finance the €277 million Tamale Water Supply Project, which has been halted due to the country’s debt problems.

Over 30 million gallons of water per day are anticipated to be supplied by the project to Tamale and the other settlements, greatly reducing long-standing supply issues for both residential and commercial use.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for a 24-hour economy model market in Bimbilla, Nanumba North Municipality, the President stated that the government’s will to address major infrastructure shortages is reflected in the choice to self-fund the project.

When the market is finished, local trade is also anticipated to increase.
The Northern Region’s capital, Tamale, has long struggled with a serious water shortage.

Ghana Water Company Limited produces between 35,000 and 38,000 cubic meters per day, compared to an expected 90,000 to 95,000 cubic meters per day. This leads to ongoing shortages and rationing.

According to Mr. Mahama, the project will use water from Yapei to supply portions of Tamale, especially the southern corridor.

He clarified that even though Parliament had previously approved a €277 million facility for the water projects in Tamale and Damongo, the European Union withdrew the cash due to Ghana’s debt crisis.

He stated that the administration will not only rely on outside assistance to meet urgent national issues.

“I have, therefore, directed the Finance Minister to secure the necessary funding to address the water crisis,” he added.

The President said that money has been set aside to replace outdated pumps at Dalun in order to temporarily enhance water flow.

The intervention has been well received by the locals, who expect that the broader project and the repair of the pump will provide the city with long-term relief.
