The Ghana Card, according to Interior Minister Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, is a vital national resource that has developed into a significant instrument for economic inclusion, national security, and governance.

Speaking at the National Identification Authority’s (NIA) 20th Anniversary Launch in Accra on Thursday, May 21, 2026, under the theme “Reflecting on the Past, Securing the Future,” the Minister stated that Ghana’s biometric identity system is now essential to both national development and service delivery.

Speaking to attendees, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak pointed out that despite the difficulties and scarce resources that marked its early years, the NIA has undergone substantial change since its founding in 2006.

According to him, the Authority has developed from a theoretical project into a robust and cutting-edge biometric identity ecosystem that benefits millions of Ghanaians.

“Building a national identity system is a continuous journey, one that must evolve alongside our people, our economy, and our national aspirations,” he said.

The Interior Minister identified three main targets for the government’s efforts to strengthen the country’s identity management system.

These include ensuring that every Ghanaian is included in the system through universal identity coverage, safeguarding the security and integrity of citizen data, and encouraging innovation to improve the effectiveness and accessibility of identification services.

In addition to urging employees, stakeholders, and development partners to maintain the institution’s advancement and keep pushing identity management systems throughout the sub-region, he reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the NIA.

Speaking at the launch as well, NIA Executive Secretary Wisdom Kwaku Deku highlighted the significance of technology in enhancing operational efficiency and modernisation while reflecting on the Authority’s accomplishments over the previous 20 years.

According to him, the Ghana Card is still an essential instrument for promoting inclusion and facilitating access to services throughout the nation.
