The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus in Parliament has strongly rejected any government plans to impose new taxes or levies, citing Ghanaians’ current economic woes.
Deputy Minority Leader Madam Patricia Appiagyei criticised the government for what she called inconsistencies in the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) taxation policies since taking office in January 2025 during a Leaders’ Media Briefing on Friday at Parliament House in Accra.
“While the Minority supports efforts to improve fiscal discipline and reduce government expenditure, the measures introduced so far have not delivered the relief citizens were expecting,” she stated.
The NPP Member of Parliament (MP) for Asokwa, Madam Appiagyei, emphasised that while the government has proposed measures to reduce waste and enhance economic management, their execution has been sluggish and mainly symbolic, providing little assistance to regular Ghanaians.
She emphasised that rather than imposing more taxes and levies that would make the situation worse, policies that lessen the burden on people and companies are necessary given the current state of the economy.
“The Minority welcomes genuine efforts to cut waste, but reforms so far appear too slow and largely cosmetic. Ghanaians are taxed enough, and the Minority reiterates its firm position of no new taxes on an already burdened citizenry,” she reiterated.
The Deputy Minority Leader went on to accuse the NDC of reversing its previous opposition position, pointing out that the party had vehemently opposed some taxes but had now implemented its own levies while in power.
Every legislative meeting begins with the Leaders’ Media Briefing, a regular interaction between the legislative Press Corps (PPC) and the House Leadership. It offers a forum for communication between the PPC, the Media Relations Department of Parliament, and the House Leaders.
