Samuel Nartey George, Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, has announced that the government will launch a new biometric SIM registration initiative to improve the security and dependability of Ghana’s telecoms sector.

The Minister said that the Electronic Communications Numbering Resource Registration exercise will fill in the holes found in the previous SIM registration procedure in response to questioning on the House floor.

The Minister went on to say that in order to prevent identity theft, mobile money fraud, SIM swap fraud, and the use of unverified SIM cards, the new system will implement real-time biometric verification through the National Identification Authority (NIA).

Stronger cybersecurity measures and a new legal framework to enhance consumer protection and the integrity of the National SIM Register will support the exercise, he continued.

Subscribers will be able to register remotely with compatible smartphones, according to the Communication Minister, and access will be improved, especially for those living in underprivileged areas, with the inclusion of registration centers, appointment systems, and mobile registration teams.
