A terrible car accident involving three automobiles at Odumase, close to Konongo, on the Kumasi-Accra Highway in the Ashanti Region, is thought to have claimed the lives of at least fifteen persons.
A truck carrying tomatoes, an empty fuel tanker, and a passenger bus were all involved in the crash.
Eyewitnesses reported that one of the vehicles tried a risky overtaking technique, which resulted in a violent head-on collision, however the reason of the accident has not yet been formally established.
While several injured victims were taken to local hospitals for medical attention, emergency personnel promptly arrived on the site to rescue passengers trapped in the debris.
While police and other emergency workers continue rescue, recovery, and traffic management operations, the event has significantly affected traffic along the major roadway.
In a similar event, new worries about road safety on the Kumasi-Accra highway were raised when another collision was reported shortly after at Dadieso, which is also close to Konongo.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the number of fatalities or given a formal explanation of the events leading up to either disaster.
