A breast cancer patient who received exceptional attention from former president John Dramani Mahama was able to survive the fatal disease.
In March 2021, Vivian Mesere, a teacher in the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) program, received a stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis (locally advanced breast cancer). She would need to have her breast removed in order to survive, the doctor said.
In the time, she was a teacher at a school in Koforidua, Eastern Region.
Financing her medical care, which started in January 2022 despite the fact that she hadn’t been paid in nearly a year, was going to be difficult until, in her words, “some members of National Democratic Congress (NDC), Eastern Regional Caucus, who heard about my problem offered me GHC10,000 as part of support.”
Vivian remembers that “not quite long” after that, “I got a call from the Former President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama who conveyed a message through his Secretary, Madam Bawa Mogtari, to [have me] transferred to the Ghana Swedish Cancer Treatment Center in Accra.”
According to reports, Mr. Mahama paid for all hospital fees, including the associated medical bills.
“He directed that I have chemotherapy. Vivian thanks the former President and “the unique grace of God” and says, “I started the treatment and by the grace of God, whilst coming to Korle-Bu, today, l have gone through chemo and radiotherapy successfully.
Vivian is currently recognized as a breast cancer survivor.
