According to reports, Prof. Botchwey, a former finance minister, passed away today, November 19, 2022, at the age of 78, at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where he had spent the previous several days receiving treatment.
He is renowned for having served as Ghana’s finance minister for the longest amount of time under the National Democratic Congress (NDC(constitutional )’s period, 1982–1991), Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), and Military Junta (1992 to 1995).
In Ghana, Professor Kwesi Botchway attended the Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School. He earned his doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School, an LL.M. from Yale Law School, and an LL.B. from the University of Ghana.
He held academic positions at the Universities of Ghana, Zambia, and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.
On the 1997 World Development Report, Prof. Botchwey served as a World Bank advisor.
He also served as the Chairman of the IMF’s Group of Independent Experts, which conducted the first-ever external evaluation of the Enhanced Structural Adjustment Facility. He also served as a consultant for the European Centre for Development Policy Management and the UNDP’s UN Special Initiative on Africa (ECDPM).
