35 PWDs have received financial assistance and working gear from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to improve their standard of living.

There are twelve ladies and twenty-three boys among the beneficiaries, who include people with autism, hearing loss, albinism, physical, visual, and intellectual disabilities.

Distributions included 16 deep freezers, 3 refrigerators, 2 popcorn makers, 2 industrial sewing machines, and seed money of GH¢2,000 for 9 and GH¢300 for 26 others.

During Monday’s distribution of the items to the PWDs, Accra Mayor Hon. Elizabeth Kwatsoe Sackey emphasized the AMA’s dedication to teaching them skills like soap and beadmaking and asked the recipients to make good use of the monies and items.

She urged families and social welfare workers to encourage and keep an eye on the progress of recipients, saying, “We want to see PWDs engaged in productive activities rather than on the streets.”

Citing programs like the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), which is suited to their medical requirements, the mayor reaffirmed the government’s commitment to helping PWDs.

At the AMA, Gladys Agbenu, a representative of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organizations (GFD), praised the Assembly’s work and urged the government to support PWD-made items in order to fight discrimination in society.

She recommended that “factories dedicated to PWDs could provide them a stigma-free working environment,” and she urged recipients to make good use of the resources in order to reap long-term benefits.
