The manufacture of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix has been immediately suspended by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) following an inquiry that found significant violations of manufacturing standards at the plant owned by Nutrifoods Ghana Limited.

A complete recall of all canned goods as well as certain batches of the 380g and 1.05kg pouches has been ordered by the regulator because of the possibility of contamination.

The ruling comes after an FDA investigation that revealed inadequate equipment maintenance, weakened sealing mechanisms, and mold on certain items, as well as numerous consumer complaints.

As important markers of possible health risks, bloated cans and pouches prompted immediate regulatory action.

Nutrifoods has previously been subject to penalties. In January 2025, the business was prohibited from producing the same product, which raised concerns about regulatory supervision.

To find out if there were enforcement breaches, the FDA has now started an internal investigation.

The Authority said in its news release that “any identified dereliction of duty will be swiftly dealt with to strengthen the FDA’s regulatory oversight.”

Prior to the FDA’s suspension, Nutrifoods voluntarily recalled 400g and 210g canned tomato blends as well as the impacted pouch batches on August 1, 2025.

Following allegations of bloating, the business ascribed the decision to National Security and FDA directives.

“We deeply regret any inconvenience caused to our consumers and trade partners; we are committed to delivering high-quality products meeting all required national food safety standards,” Nutrifoods said in its statement.

Customers who have been impacted are encouraged to return items to the Tema office of Nutrifoods or authorized distributors for exchanges. You can also contact the business at [email protected] or 050 538 4429.

The FDA has emphasized its commitment to protecting public health by urging consumers, merchants, and distributors to adhere to the recall.

“We will continue to exercise rigorous oversight in accordance with our mandate,” the release said.

The FDA can be reached via phone at 0551112224/5, [email protected], or through its social media accounts (@fdaghana).
