Broadcast journalist Emmanuel Kwakye Asare has been granted bail by an Accra Circuit Court in relation to the release of allegedly misleading information about the helicopter crash on August 6.

Asare, who is employed by Wontumi Multimedia, showed up in court on Wednesday wearing all black and remained calm during the entire hearing.

He was released on GH¢100,000 bail with two sureties after being hospitalized. The sureties must be civil servants with at least GH¢5,000 in income, according to the ruling of the presiding judge, Mr. Samuel Bright Acquah.

According to the terms of his bail, Asare must appear once a week at the Ghana Police Service’s Special Investigations Unit. The lawsuit was postponed until September 1, 2025.

The prosecution had previously argued against the bail request, claiming that they were still getting ready to make their disclosures. Citing the prosecution’s position, Mr. Acquah postponed his decision on the case until Wednesday on Monday, August 25.

The substantive prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Emmanuel Haligah, received a briefing from Chief Inspector Daniel Danku.

The prosecution claims that on August 9, 2025, Asare, host of the Wontumi Radio program Nsempafie, said in a live broadcast, “If your family member is among those who died, you must hold President Mahama responsible because he is aware of everything.”

The prosecution also claimed that Asare blamed President Mahama for the Ashanti Region’s Akrofoum helicopter tragedy.

“This statement, which was false, has generated an uproar within sections of the populace,” prosecutors informed the court.

On August 12, 2025, Asare was taken into custody based on police intelligence. He allegedly acknowledged the offense in his caution statement during the course of the investigation.

Since then, he has entered a not guilty plea to the accusation of publishing false information with the intention of inciting panic and anxiety.
