A mobile transformer has been deployed by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) as part of continuous efforts to increase power reliability in the Tse Addo area of the Greater Accra Region. This will improve the delivery of energy and ease the strain on the current infrastructure.
The temporary installation of a mobile transformer at Tse Addo, which has a 20/26 Mega Volt Ampere (MVA) capacity and operates at 33/11 Kilovolts (kV), is intended to relieve some of the strain on the overburdened La Primary Substation.
At two in the morning, the unit was moved to the Burma Hill location, marking the start of the installation procedure.
The La Primary Substation is currently running above 100 percent capacity, hence the interim measure is required, according to Ing. Emmanuel Kwame Addo, Maintenance Manager of ECG Subtransmission in Accra, who spoke prior to the installation.
“Ideally, a transformer should carry a load of around 70 percent. What we have now is a transformer running beyond its safe limit,” he said.
“This mobile unit will allow us to transfer some of the load from the La Primary Substation and create room to upgrade the existing transformer to meet the growing demand.”
Due to rising energy needs, Tse Addo, a quickly growing neighborhood renowned for its upscale residential and commercial structures, has had power stability issues.

Ing. Addo asked locals to help ECG’s efforts by using less energy wherever they can.
Prior to being decommissioned and moved to Tse Addo, the mobile transformer was stationed at Agbogba, where it assisted in stabilizing the electricity supply.
ECG states that the unit will be relocated to another region experiencing comparable power instability as soon as the situation in Tse Addo improves.
He said that the installation of the mobile transformer demonstrates ECG’s dedication to providing dependable power transmission throughout the area even as long-term infrastructural upgrades are being made.
