The National Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership in the Mampong Constituency has been given a deadline by Mamponghene Daasebre Osei Bonsu II to take back anti-Ashanti remarks made by certain party youngsters.
The remarks were made against Esther Dwomoh, an Ashanti, being nominated as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE). On April 9 and 10, the NDC youth demonstrated against the alleged nomination by burning and damaging party property.
“Ashanti is a region known for its tolerance and welcoming nature, where other tribes are allowed to install their own chiefs,” the Mamponghene said in condemnation of the acts.
He asked why certain people were attempting to sow discord among the Mampong populace. From February 25, 1999, to April 26, 1999, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, a former registrar of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, presided over the Kingdom of Ashanti as its regent.
As they await President John Dramani Mahama’s final judgment about the MCE nomination, the NDC leadership has expressed regret for the violence, denounced the youth’s behavior, and called for composure.
The NDC leadership has been given till tomorrow afternoon by the Mamponghene to take back the anti-Ashanti remarks, and failure to do so will have dire repercussions.
