President John Dramani Mahama has officially broken ground for the construction of an interconnecting concourse between Terminals 2 and 3 at Accra International Airport, kicking off a major infrastructure expansion aimed at alleviating congestion and strengthening Ghana’s position as a leading aviation hub in West Africa.
Speaking at the event, President Mahama emphasised that the project goes beyond symbolism, characterising it as a strategic investment in effectiveness, passenger experience, and the nation’s long-term economic development.
He pointed out that Ghana’s rising connectedness and attraction as a travel destination are reflected in the steady increase in passenger traffic from 1.8 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2025.

President Mahama noted growing operational pressures, especially during peak hours when congestion continues to impact important airport services, even as he acknowledged the progress.
He emphasised that immediate action was required to avoid additional pressure on productivity and service provision.
When the new concourse is finished, it will have state-of-the-art passenger boarding bridges, updated waiting spaces, VIP lounges, retail stores, and improved service infrastructure that will facilitate easy travel between terminals and improve airport operations in general.
