Dr. Clement Apaak, Deputy Minister of Education, has issued a warning that Senior High School (SHS) administrators who fail to provide students with sufficient meals will be subject to harsh penalties if they are discovered to be involved.

On Saturday, January 17, 2026, Dr. Apaak added his voice to an official statement issued by the Ghana Education Service (GES) on an alleged feeding scenario at the Savelugu Senior High School by posting a warning on Facebook.

“Our students deserve balanced, nutritious and sufficient meals. Government has made sufficient funds available to ensure that,” according to Dr. Apaak.

He cautioned that bursars, matrons, and heads who participate in actions that deny pupils a healthy meal would be held responsible.

“Managers of our secondary schools whose conduct denies our students good meals would face severe consequences if found complicit,” he continued.

The remarks come after the GES acknowledged in a statement that a video that went viral on social media raised questions about the food supply at Savelugu Senior High School.

The Service claimed that management had noticed the accusations and started looking into the situation.

According to the statement, “management of the Ghana Education Service has seen a video circulating on social media about an alleged food situation at Savelugu Senior High School.”

The GES emphasised that feeding students is still a top priority and called any kind of poor management a grave crime.

“Management takes the quality of student feeding very seriously, hence it prioritises quality feeding and views mismanagement as a serious offence,” the statement noted.

In response to public concerns, the Service stated that the episode should not be interpreted as representative of the state of the country.

The statement read, “Management wishes to assure the public, especially parents, that the incident at Savelugu Senior High School is an isolated case and does not reflect the overall feeding status nationwide.”

GES also revealed that investigations had already started and promised more stringent control in the future.

The statement also stated that “investigations have been initiated into the matter” and announced intentions to increase the number of surprise monitoring visits to schools nationwide.

In order to avoid mistakes in the future, the Service also urged school administrators and other interested parties to fully collaborate with management.

According to the statement, “stakeholders, and school heads especially, are urged to promptly report any peculiar challenges they encounter to management for timely intervention.”

The government’s stance that inadequate feeding practices cannot be justified by financial limitations is reinforced by Dr. Apaak’s intervention, especially at a time when resources have been made available to support the wellbeing of students.
