Streetlights have been provided to traders at the Kantamanto Market by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in order to enhance the area’s visibility, security, and business conditions.
Following previous discussions with market leaders regarding the need to improve lighting within the market, Mr. Paul Oblie Laryea, the Policy Advisor to the Mayor of Accra, gave the items to the traders. The eight boxes contained two lamps apiece.
The presentation was led by Mr Nii Sakum Korley, the Deputy Director in charge of the AMA’s 24-Hour Economy Office, who stated that the donation was a part of the Assembly’s commitment to assist traders and address issues brought up by the market leadership.
He stated that the AMA had acknowledged the necessity for streetlights across the market and that the first 16 lights were being supplied so that installation work could start while more were sought after.

According to Mr. Korley, the Assembly is still dedicated to keeping its word to the traders and making the marketplace more secure and practical for commercial operations.
After accepting the streetlights, Mr. Opoku Afreh, the market president, praised the AMA for the gesture, calling it historic.
He added that the market leadership and traders were appreciative of the support and that this was the first time the Assembly had given such a donation to the traders.
Mr. Afreh emphasised that when public institutions performed well, it was crucial for beneficiaries to recognise and value such efforts in the same way that they voiced concerns when things went wrong. He said that the donation showed the Assembly’s willingness to listen to traders’ concerns and positively respond to their needs.
Additionally, Mr. Afreh warned traders not to oppose legitimate payments and urged them to assist AMA officials in fulfilling allowed fees and other obligations. He emphasised that the opportunity to trade inside the market came with responsibilities.
He called on traders to address any issues they had with AMA officials through the market leadership rather than confronting them, and asked them to present receipts when requested by authorised Assembly officers.
The presentation is anticipated to promote cooperation between the AMA and market players while supporting initiatives to improve lighting at Kantamanto Market, especially during early morning and late trading activity.
