A three-vehicle accident has caused severe traffic congestion on the Accra-Kumasi Highway after the collision blocked the Birimso Bridge section of the N6 Highway, leaving hundreds of motorists stranded.

According to the Ghana Police Service, the road accident occurred on Monday, August 3, 2026, involving a passenger bus, a loaded articulated truck, and a saloon car. The crash completely blocked both lanes of the highway, disrupting traffic between Accra and Kumasi.

In a statement, the police confirmed that officers from the Eastern South Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) in Kibi were quickly deployed to the accident scene to manage traffic, assist road users, and coordinate efforts to clear the wreckage.

To reduce delays and ease congestion, the Ghana Police Service introduced temporary traffic diversions. Motorists travelling towards Accra have been redirected through Kibi at Nsutam, while vehicles heading to Kumasi are being diverted through Apedwa until the highway is fully reopened.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the road crash or whether there were any injuries or fatalities.

The Ghana Police Service has advised motorists to remain patient, follow traffic directions from police officers, and use the approved diversion routes as emergency teams work to clear the accident scene and restore normal traffic flow on the Accra-Kumasi Highway.
