Forty-three suspects have been arraigned before the Buipe Magistrate Court in connection with the killing of General Constable Redeemer Owusu at Gindabour in Ghana’s Savannah Region.
The suspects were brought before the court on Friday and charged with murder and abetment of the murder of a public officer following days of unrest in the community.
The disturbances reportedly began after the death of a local teacher, Seidu Abu, whose death followed an encounter with police officers at Gindabour.
43 Suspects Face Court Over Police Officer’s Death
According to reports, the suspects were transported to court by bus on Friday afternoon as relatives and community members gathered at the court premises.
Some family members, particularly relatives from Damongo, were reportedly seen in tears as the accused persons were taken into court.
The latest court appearance follows an earlier announcement by the Savannah Regional Police Command that 36 suspects had been arrested in connection with the attack and were assisting with investigations.
The number of suspects subsequently arraigned before the Buipe Magistrate Court has risen to 43.
Additional Suspect to Face Firearm Charges
Police have also arrested another male suspect in connection with the incident.
The suspect was reportedly arrested on Thursday night while in possession of a locally manufactured pistol and locally made ammunition.
According to the police, he is expected to face charges including murder and unlawful possession of a firearm before the Damongo Circuit Court.
The development forms part of ongoing investigations into the violence and the death of the police officer.
How the Gindabour Unrest Started
The unrest in Gindabour reportedly followed the death of a teacher identified as Seidu Abu.
Earlier accounts indicated that Abu was riding a motorbike when he encountered police officers in the area. He was later found dead, triggering anger among some residents.
The incident subsequently escalated, with some residents attacking police personnel in the community.
During the ensuing violence, General Constable Redeemer Owusu was killed.
The bodies of the deceased police officer and the motorbike rider were conveyed to the Damongo Morgue for preservation and autopsy as investigations continued.
IGP Visits Gindabour
Inspector-General of Police Patrick Tetteh Yohunu has since visited Gindabour together with personnel from Police Headquarters.
The IGP is expected to meet the chiefs of Gindabour and Kog, who have remained in the community with their immediate families despite reports that several residents fled the area following the unrest.
The Ghana Police Service has deployed investigators, intelligence officers and reinforcement teams to the affected community.
The deployment is aimed at supporting investigations into the violence, gathering intelligence and maintaining security in the area.
The ongoing police investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the death of General Constable Redeemer Owusu and the events that led to the unrest in Gindabour.
