Dr. Randy Abbey, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), has voiced his strong disapproval following the discovery of a significant amount of imported cocopeat left at the Sewhi Boako Cocoa station in the Sewhi Wiaso Municipality in the Western North Region.
On a recent inspection visit to the Western North Region, Dr. Abbey was clearly distressed to observe the abandoned cocopeat stockpile—a vital component in the manufacturing of cocoa seedlings.
He wondered why so much of the material had been imported, only to be thrown out and left to rot in the harsh weather.
“This is unacceptable; this is a critical input we invested in to boost cocoa production. To see it lying here, wasted and unutilized, is deeply troubling,” Dr. Abbey said
Since then, the head of COCOBOD has demanded an urgent investigation into the issue and placed responsibility for the abandoned input on local managers and officials.
Additionally, he emphasized that the distribution and usage of agricultural inputs under COCOBOD’s programs must be closely monitored and accountable.
In the hopes that it will result in more effective management of the region’s cocoa resources, local farmers and communities have embraced Dr. Abbey’s concern.
