Thousands of mourners from all across the nation have gathered in Mampong, Ashanti Region, to begin the funeral ceremonies for the late Asante Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, will perform the last rites during the traditional funeral, known in Akan as Doteyie, which started on Thursday, June 6, and will end on Monday, June 9.

As the people pay their final respects to the deceased chief, the mourning period is characterized by drumming, dancing, and sacred traditional rites conducted by spiritual leaders dressed in traditional garb.

On Saturday, June 7, mourners wore crimson and black, which stand for both respect and sorrow.

On August 25, 1996, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, the 28th occupant of the Silver Stool and the Krontihene of Asanteman, succeeded to the Asante Mampong throne.

A renowned scholar and administrator, Daasebre concluded a 28-year career in public service in 1991 when he was appointed Registrar of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and retired in 2000.
