Ghana’s commitment to global immunization efforts has been reaffirmed by President John Mahama, who met with international health authorities in Brussels.

These sessions served as a prelude to yesterday’s pledging conference of the GAVI Vaccine Alliance in Brussels.

President Mahama met with José Manuel Barroso, the chair of the GAVI Board, who thanked him for his continuous support of vaccine equity.

President Mahama’s presence at the pledge event was emphasized, and he stated that the Presidents’ powerful voice will be crucial in rallying donors to support GAVI’s life-saving efforts.

President Mahama stated that Ghana had made considerable progress in the health sector, especially in primary healthcare, at a separate meeting with Bill Gates, the philanthropist and president of the European Council.

In addition, he noted, the government has created a National Vaccine Institute and uncapped the National Health Insurance Fund.

The Gates Foundation’s significant contributions to Ghana’s health sector and its crucial participation in GAVI’s international immunization efforts were recognized by the president.

Yesterday’s high-level pledging session was a pivotal point in GAVI’s 2026–2030 strategy, which seeks to avoid an estimated eight million deaths and vaccinate an extra 500 million children globally.

President Mahama, a well-known supporter of global health equity, advocated for more funding for immunization programs, especially in underdeveloped countries.

Over the years, Ghana’s collaboration with GAVI has produced notable public health advantages, such as notable drops in child mortality and improved ability to respond to disease outbreaks.

Therefore, President Mahama’s visits to Brussels highlight the nation’s ongoing leadership in advancing affordable healthcare options throughout Africa and beyond.

The President, who has always supported vaccination, emphasized the value of international cooperation in guaranteeing fair access to vaccines, especially for lower-income countries.

“A fully funded GAVI will save lives, boost economies, and fortify global health security,” he said.

He has already advocated for the cause. The President was instrumental in galvanizing support for GAVI’s life-saving programs in 2013.

The European Union, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and GAVI are co-hosting the Global Summit on Health and Prosperity through Immunization.

GAVI’s 2026–2030 plan, which aims to vaccinate 500 million more children, avert eight million deaths, and mitigate 150 disease outbreaks while generating over $100 billion in economic benefits, is the focus of the summit.

GAVI has prevented 18.8 million lives, vaccinated nearly a billion children, and helped disadvantaged countries earn $250 billion in economic benefits since its launch in 2000.
