The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has declared that it will launch a special enforcement operation at night to target food sellers operating in the city without required medical screening.

The AMA says that the action is a component of larger initiatives to increase adherence to food safety regulations, raise cleanliness standards, and guarantee that city dwellers are shielded from foodborne illnesses.

Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Head of Public Affairs, revealed that although many daytime food vendors had complied with the medical screening requirements because Environmental Health Officers regularly monitored them, many night operators had purposefully avoided the procedure by taking advantage of lax enforcement after dark.

He ordered all night food vendors in the city to go through a medical screening by the end of the week and threatened to impose severe penalties if they didn’t comply when the operation started on Monday.

He threatened to take their food, put them under arrest, or stop them from selling completely if vendors were discovered to be operating without legitimate medical certifications.

In order to finish the screening process, he recommended impacted vendors to go to specific locations, such as the AMA Metropolitan Health Directorate at the Head Office and the Okaikoi South, Ablekuma South, and Ashiedu Keteke Sub-Metropolitan offices.

Regardless of the time of day, he underlined that the Assembly was still dedicated to safeguarding public health and would not think twice about enforcing rules against any seller who did not comply.
