A coordinated nationwide post-flood recovery and mitigation effort has been announced by the government with the goal of rebuilding impacted communities and enhancing resilience against future flooding.

The Ghana Armed Forces will oversee the exercise, which will involve a cleanup and restoration effort aimed at enhancing cleanliness, re-establishing public safety, and reducing possible dangers to public health, such as outbreaks of water-borne illnesses.

The Director General of Joint Operations of the Ghana Armed Forces, Forster Okae-Yeboah, stated during a press briefing on the National Update on the Recent Floods that the government is appreciative of private sector partners’ assistance, including the supply of equipment, logistics, and technical know-how to bolster ongoing recovery efforts.

In an effort to restore order and lessen future flood susceptibility, he added, the exercise will include enforcement measures, such as the removal of structures built within streams or those judged to pose imminent safety threats.

With GH¢350 million set aside for emergency assistance, rehabilitation, and long-term flood mitigation actions, the government has reaffirmed its commitment to the recovery program.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the president’s spokesperson, promised that all displaced people will receive assistance while the impacted villages are rebuilt.
