A former student who was identified as the ringleader is currently being sought after after the Ghana Education Service confirmed that a female student was allegedly gang-raped and a male student was stabbed in separate incidents related to a significant inter-school sporting event last week.
On February 11, 2026, the GES stated in a brief and very precise statement that the events took place during or close to the Super Zonal Sports Competition, which was held in the Eastern Region from February 4–6.
The service informed the public that it had “received reports of serious misconducts involving students” and acted quickly to allay fears.
The statement stated, “The reported incidents include a stabbing and an alleged gang-rape. Management condemns these acts in the strongest terms and emphasises that such behaviour has no place within the Ghana Education Service,” indicating how seriously the hierarchy takes the issue.
The statement claims that the victim of the stabbing is a Koforidua Senior High Technical School student.According to the GES, the victim was allegedly attacked by New Juaben Senior High School students.
The incident happened about 200 meters from the competition site when the student had gone out to lunch with a friend.
In relation to that attack, one suspect has been taken into custody.
The nature of the second occurrence is noticeably more serious.
“The reports further indicate that a female student of Osinu Senior High School was allegedly raped in a bush at some distance from the competition grounds,” the statement said.
Two students are being held by the police in connection with this crime. Nonetheless, a third suspect is still at large and is being searched. He was described by the GES as “the alleged ringleader and an old student of Koforidua Senior High Technical School.”
The public was reassured by the service that the victims were not left behind.
The female student “has received medical attention and has since been discharged from the hospital. She is being provided with counselling and psychosocial support by the Regional Guidance and Counselling Coordinator, the Head of the Girls’ Education Unit, and officers of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit.”
Following treatment, the stabbing victim was also released.
The violence was presented by the GES as a basic rejection of the goal of school athletics, which is to “nurturing talent, promoting discipline, teamwork, and unity among students.”
The warning stated that all violators “will be taken through due process and, when found guilty, will be dealt with accordingly.”
The schools in question will be subject to sanctions from the Regional Director of Education “to serve as a deterrent.”
In closing, the management asked all parties involved to “remain calm and cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies as investigations continue.”
