Students of St. Mary’s Basic and Junior High School in Korle Gonno in Accra have been urged by Her Excellency the First Lady, Mrs. Lordina Dramani Mahama, to be self-assured and not discouraged by cultural stereotypes against girls.

During a visit to the school on Thursday, she offered the uplifting message and provided the students with necessary learning resources. Mrs. Mahama emphasized the need of self-belief and education for girls.

“Do not be intimidated because you are girls. Be confident in your abilities,” she added, adding that she was there as an ambassador for the “Educating Linda Programme” in addition to her role as First Lady and creator of the Lordina Foundation.

The Merck Foundation’s “Educating Linda Programme” encourages underprivileged girls to continue their education and follow their aspirations.

She continued, “This programme is very close to my heart as a woman from a humble background. Education is a transformative tool that changes individuals, families, communities, and nations,”

Through a partnership with the Merck Foundation, twenty excellent girls from the St Mary’s R/C Girls Basic School have been awarded scholarships by the Lordina Foundation to pursue their education.

Exercise books, water bottles, pencil holders, rulers, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, pens, and colored pencils were among the school items that the First Lady gave them to improve their education.

Patience Addy, the school’s headmistress, expressed gratitude to the Lordina and Merck Foundations for their support, pointing out that the scholarships have inspired the girls to achieve academic success.

She said that the First Lady’s attendance and support will greatly increase their self-confidence and inspire them to set higher goals.

The delegation was accompanied by Martha Breh, the Circuit Supervisor from the Greater Accra Metro Education Office, who commended the kind donation and said the program will encourage the girls to pursue their goals with determination.

The scholarship recipient, Miss Emelia Mensah, conveyed her sincere appreciation for the assistance. She explained that the scholarship allowed her to concentrate entirely on her academics by relieving her of the cost of school materials.
